Gelcoat Boat Keel
The bottom of this boat has been terribly abused, obviously beached on a gravel shore, even sideways, and rocking against waves, so this is how i get the form back into the keel of the boat.. Def have that repaired there is some bare glass and from the pics it look looked pretty rough around the edges. i don't think you are going to get a keel guard to seeks properly unless you have all those deep grooves and crevices fixed anyways.. - applied gelcoat (thoroughly mixed with 2% mekp) with a quality brush. brushed in such away that it remained thick on the keel and tapered out thin to the taped edge. i feathered it quickly to accomplish this - you might want to practice with straight gel on a board prior to get the technique down..
I don't think scraped gelcoat on the forefoot of a whaler is too unusual. i also don't think its worth repairing with color matched gelcoat unless you are really sure you will never pull your boat up on a beach.. For current boats, your dealer might be able to supply matching gelcoat. but due to weathering on your boat, it may not match. there are kits from companies such as evercoat with pigments to add to the resin for a match. if you have a sample, you can match a gallon of gelcoat from rayplex composites (fibreglass.com).. I have 10kilos of spray gelcoat 1kg of wax in styrene 250ml of m.e.k peroxide 40% polyester catalyst area i will be spraying is around 17 by 6ft of course towards the keel the shape changes. tempratures at the moment are around 65-69 in the morning during the day 95.
